Databases

by Steven E DuCharme, Tuesday, April 05, 2005, 04:06 (7320 days ago) @ Moderator

Personally I don't like the use of databases in chess. My brain v. yours. May the better chess mind win.

I have no problem with someone playing against a computer or chess engine.

Agree? Disagree? Don't care? :-P

Databases

Hi Steven;

I play in a lot of chess clubs. ( ICC, WCN, Chess.Net). These clubs I play mostly short time games - 10, 15, 20 min - and the use of an engine is forbidden. If you use an engine you must be listed as a computer and not a human player. If I want to play a computer I will simply purchase Chessmaster 10 or Fritz and not have to join the club. Personally I don't see the point of usuing a computer to calculate the moves for me in a game against another human. Its not fair. I play chess to improve "MY GAME".

Now-- I also play turn-based chess (like corispondence) where I have anywhere from 3 to 7 days to make a move. These clubs (Gameknot, Red Hot Pawn) are designed for a player to study his moves over a long period of time. Chess engines are not allowed but databases are. And yes I do use databases in these games for the first 5 to 10 moves. There allowed because they help a player understand the opening phase of a game. Databases give me many options and I seem to learn from them....bye CajunDog:-)
