whilst I'm patiently waiting for the august exc, I'm trying to solve the lower sections in the library - a lot of them are just as difficult for me as the advanced section!
all the best, siegrun

It is funny to see someone who traditionally does the advanced section actually say that. I don't play tournaments so when I started here I had no idea what level to start with. I have been doing beginner and they have been plenty challenging, but I also do the intermediate and advanced puzzles in the puzzle review section (much like what I think you are talking about here) and some months I do better on the harder ones than I do on the allegedly easier ones.

I have often wondered what makes a puzzle a beginner puzzle vs intermediate or advanced.

Just for giggles I did a little personal testing. I did 30 of the intermediate puzzles and my average was 6% higher than what I scored on the first 30 of the beginner exercises. Then I did the advanced exercises, and even though I was getting tired and was eating ice cream while doing them I still scored 3% higher on the advanced than I did on the beginner exercises.

None of this is what I would call scientific, but it is at least interesting to me. I always assumed there was a large skill difference between the different sets. This would indicate they are really all pretty much the same.

That was an interesting test, Don. The novice's seems to be the only easy one. But I showed them to beginners & they couldn't solve the last 2 either.
This only goes to show that titled players aren't good at teaching beginners!
I'm sure it can be graded properly. They'd have to look at books written for absolute beginners.
But I'm not complaining, because this way I'm getting good value for my money. Bad luck on the real beginners, though. They must think that this is a subject they're never going to master.
