Hi,
As the title suggests, I had high hopes for this site and signed up safe in the knowledge that I could get a refund of my investment if I were dissatisfied.
I remember when I signed up I had a money back guarantee promised If i wasn't happy.
With a lack of activity from the Grandmaster contributors, I feel its time to surf away and examine other area's that seem to offer better commitment to their patrons as this site so blatently overlooks.

I don't think a refund is in your future (or anyone here). If the site completely dies, which with the lack of updates over halfway into the current month strongly suggests is happening, there isn't likely anyone to get your money from.
Plus, their refund offer wasn't 'if you aren't happy' but rather 'if after using the site for a year and not improving your game' so, I guess technically, if the site never even lasts for a year you can't actually use it for a year and not improve.
Plus, web businesses are just like regular businesses (do I keep saying that?) When a retail storefront type business goes under you can't get refunds from them any more than you will get a refund from this place if it is no longer in business.
I suspect the only reason the existing site and this message board are still working is because they were prepaid. If they don't get more customers, or accomplish whatever the reason is that they have given up, then whenever that runs out this will just suddenly stop working one day.

I am always suspect of new ventures such as this one Improve Your Chess. If you paid by credit card or PayPal/WorldPay, etc. put the entire amount in dispute with your card's issuing bank. I saved every stitch of my enrollment documentation. Most of you should be able to find electronic records in your computer of the transaction if you do not have the hard copies. Please pursue this matter and let's not let them get away with this nonsense. Keep in mind those names who endorsed this site. One has a book nominated for Book of the Year at Chess Cafe. Be sure to vote against it too. I truly dispise liars and dishonest people just seeking to cheat another person out of their hard earned money.

You may be drawing some pretty broad conclusions. I am not happy about what has happened here either, but it is pretty difficult to conclude who is to blame. The chess professionals here may not have had much, if anything, to do with its ultimate demise. I am not saying they didn't either. I am just saying you can't be sure and I would caution against launching personal attacks against the convenient targets who were unlucky enough to have their name shared with the public.
For all we know this was started by some venture capitalist who thought it would make a certain amount of money and when it didn't he stopped funding it and left everyone else hanging. Stranger things have been known to happen.
For your refund idea to work you have to be within the dispute window with your credit card company. For most people that is one billing period after the charge appeared on your statement. Many people have been here a while and are way past that deadline. Considering what I paid for membership here vs what hasn't been delivered, a pro-rated refund for services not rendered would be about $4. Hardly worth getting too worked up over.

If you ever have any fraudulent charges, from any entity, you need to dispute them in accordance with the policies of your particular credit card. Typically you will not be held responsible for charges where you follow the procedures, which usually means disputing the charge(s) in writing within 30 days of receiving the bill where the fraudulent charge was listed.
I find myself really missing the weekly Daniel King game :(

I'm sorely disappointed that no one had the decency to inform anyone of their predicament. As far as I'm concerned, they took the money and ran!
