Chesspublishing.com (Problems)

Hi everyone,
Firstly, the titled players have been as much in the dark as you. I tried phoning Nathan many times without success, but it seems that he was really very ill. We all hope that he has made a full recovery. :-)
As you probably know Chess Publishing Ltd have verbally agreed to takeover the running of Improve Your Chess. The chesspublishing.com site has been running uninterrupted for nearly seven years now, producing cutting edge opening theory, and so I think the future of the IYC site is in very safe hands. :-)
Once the technical details are sorted we will have a good think about making the site even more interesting, but in the meantime I have contacted the other writers and will start getting the site material up-to-date, starting with the 'February' tactics which should be online later today, and a new HGIYC.
If anyone wants to get in touch with me directly they can use the support@chesspublishing.com address, or leave a message either here or on the chesspublishing.com Forum as I keep a fairly constant eye on this.

This Forum seems a bit moribund, would subscibers prefer I open a section on the chesspublishing.com Forum especially for IYC? At least there would be more happening? ;-)

Well, I'm glad our work is back again! I hope we can still see any news via this forum. Since it's only 2 more months of work, it doesn't seem worthwhile to access yet another website. Paying ? 17 was a very good investment. In the mean time I've found many websites where you can study chess free of charge...

I enjoyed studying the Gallagher article even though I scored badly. But this is because I don't do gambits - once my pawn is gone, I'd probably never get it back again (my tactics aren't good enough for this!)
So, I went through it quickly & now I'm going to take a wee chess set & go over all the variations & subvariations. I did notice that he sometimes said that there would be compensation for the lost pawn, but since these were complicated positions, in my case ...?

I have problems with gambits too. I don't think they really work for people until they are good enough to take advantage of subtle positional advantages and maintain initiative. Afterall, once you lose the initiative the positional advantage you got from the pawn sacrifice will erode away and then all you accomplished was a material disadvantage ;)

For players that understand the subtleties better they obviously have their place. I bet you really have to be close to 2000 in your rating before you can consistently be a decent gambit player (of course, someone will now disagree with me).

Honestly i belive the lower rating you have the more efficent gambits will work. Forget all about prepared lines and theory, but rather focus on the fact that more speed out of the opening, opened lines for your rocks and a space advantage ensures that your tasks in the midddlegame will be much easier for you than your opponent. Then you can count pawns when the ending occours, and if still a pawn down "bad luck". But below the 2000 level i suppose most games are more or less decided in the middle game anyway.;-)
