Honestly i belive the lower rating you have the more efficent gambits will work. Forget all about prepared lines and theory, but rather focus on the fact that more speed out of the opening, opened lines for your rocks and a space advantage ensures that your tasks in the midddlegame will be much easier for you than your opponent. Then you can count pawns when the ending occours, and if still a pawn down "bad luck". But below the 2000 level i suppose most games are more or less decided in the middle game anyway.
