Windows or other? (General)

by Tony Kosten ⌂ @, Tuesday, March 21, 2006, 17:01 (7208 days ago)

It did occur to me that a lot of the things on the site are for Windows users - the HGIYC software and ChessBase things can only be used on Windows.
Are there any Mac or Linux users out there?

Most Mac and Linux users can use Windows applications.

I am a Linux user, and if things were available on Linux, I would use them. (e.g. the tactical exercises don't seem to work quite as well with Firefox on Linux as they do on Windows, so I use Windows). I always find there are somethings that I have to have Windows for, so Windows only isn't a problem for me.

I think that the HGIYC software could be improved somewhat.

I was toying with the idea of converting the HGIYC articles to ChessBase instead (they have quite a neat question and answer capability), but this would tie us even more to Windows and ChessBase.

Maybe we should ask ChessBase for some sort of reduction! :-)

My preference would be to have as much of it as possible in ChessBase format, but that probably wouldn't be the majority opinion. It isn't the most user friendly program in the world, but it is really nice once you get used to using it. This would be great for the tactics puzzles too since there are times, usually one puzzle a month, where I don't get the solution, or I question what if the 'opponent' made a different counter move. It would be nice to be able to fire up the engine to see what it thinks of my variation.

Can't you just press 'S' in ChessBase and setup the position? I guess this might be a bit time-consuming! :-(

Precisly my point in the Archive thread, I've a few positions in CB format, but I was spending more time setting up the positions than actual time on the positions themselves.

I thought as they may already exist then maybe they could be shared, as other articles on this site are.

Maybe woth a future sub on its own :-)

Would anyone else be interested in this? I also have all the old 'instructive' stuff in a ChessBase file - would subscribers like it as a download? :-)

I'd just like to add my vote to moving away from the hgiyc software. See the previous forum disucssion on the fact that it uses 98% of your cpu even when doing nothing (look at tactica1.exe in task manager). Other problems are that it asks you questions about previous positions after a different move has already been played on the board, and it doesn't allow you any means of entering the additional points, so you have to record them manually anyway. might as well just use chessbase format.

Yes, I agree that the cpu utilisation is a real problem, the programmer was looking into it, but nothing seems to have changed! :-(
There is a new facility for entering the additional points, but we haven't used it too much.
We did have a look at doing the last one in chessbase format, but it turns out that there are a couple of problems there, too! Firstly, it misses out the opening moves and goes straight to the first tactic, second (and more important) there were problems putting Daniel's long explanations in the Q & A text box. :-(
We are still looking into this though.
