Look of the site (General)
My girlfriend doesn't like the content of the opening page, and finds a lot of the other pages too 'wide'. Does anyone else have any real dislikes?

My girlfriend (a web designer) thought it looked mostly ok. Didn't like the 3d rotating new, thought there was sometimes a lot of white space around the headings. There is also a bit of inconsistency in alignment (left aligned v centered) and what happens when you resize the browser.
I think these are all minor though. You should concentrate on utility rather than looks. In general, I can find the information that I want to, so its ok.

You should never use the words 'wide' and 'girlfriend' in the same sentence. It is just asking for trouble ;)

Yes, the 'new' icon is particularly annoying in Firefox, where it seems to rotate 10 times faster!
I can make all the text left-aligned or centered - which is easiest on the eyes?
I know the content is the key thing with a site like this, but even so, it might as well look nice!

Whilst agreeing that content is king I don't think the overall look of this site properly reflects the quality of the content. To me it looks a little dated (my apologies if the designer is reading this). I find the look of e.g. redhotpawn.com and chess.emrald.net more contemporary.
With the functions I would welcome the opportunity to "see the solution" and to review problems I've failed to solve via a button on the page that informs me I've failed.
But overall I'm very grateful for all the time, hard work and thought that goes into this site -
