Exercises (General)

Only a small gripe. When completing the exercises I would like to be able to rotate the board, so that if it is black to play I am looking at the problem from the black side of the board. I know that it's possible when reviewing the solutions. How about it guys. Can it be done?
P.S. Really enjoying the site so far thx. Keep it up! :-D

I initially thought I had that same gripe too, but I later decided I liked it better this way. The way I figured it was that it would be helping not only to find the best moves vs my opponent, but by not being able to rotate the board it helps me look at the perspective of watching for attacks against me.

I know what you mean Don but the exercises are set up with a view to you playing them not finding a defense against them. If the game is already at the stage that black has a 'winning' move then as white we would have already played a 'bad' moved that put us in that position. We are being asked to find a move as the black player and in that respect I want to see the board from that perspective.

Is it possible to retake the test without seeing the solutions at all? You are told that you chose the wrong move but I would like another chance without being told what the answer is. Perhaps I've just missed it?

I can now reveal that we are seriously looking at an exercises library where you can go back over them in non-timed, non-scoring mode as many times as you want.

It's not definite but watch this space.

I'm watching :-)I hope it happens. In the meantime can someone give me an indication of how one knows one is doing well. I log on as an intermediate player though I'm probably overestimating my ability by doing so. I just think I can't really describe myself as a beginner though even at age 51 it is the first year I have ever played competitive chess. I have no chance of doing the exercises in the time limit. I tend to take the test as if I was playing over the board think for a while and then move. I got something like 69% in my second set of exercises but have no idea of whether that is any good at all. Anyway I did better at the second lot than the first so perhaps that's progress. How do other people judge their own performance?

Yes, please. Can I add my request for this too so that you are always playing from the side that you're asked to find the move from?
Fantastic site :-D

I have just been going through the Javascript and it seems it is possible to flip the board by pressing the / key on the Numeric keyboard! :-)
Glad you like the site!
