Amateur's Mind (Silman) (General)

by Don Lester, Monday, October 30, 2006, 06:27 (6746 days ago)

I received an email tonight from someone referencing one of my posts here about a Chessbase database of The Amateur's Mind, which is a popular chess book written by IM Jeremy Silman (who might be more than an IM by now, but he was an IM when the book was published).

Anyway, they wanted to know a source for that database. Not remembering where I got the one I have, I poked around the Internet a bit, including www.jeremysilman.com (seemed reasonable enough) and could not find it anywhere. Obviously it is out there somewhere, I just couldn't find it.

It should be noted though that the database I am talking about does not contain any of the book's text. It is a companion to the book that allows you to have your chess program up, load each position mentioned in the book, and then it has each variation already entered so you can just advance through them. I find this very helpful as I am not always able to accurately picture the board after several moves, which most chess books seem to assume everyone can do.

So, it is out there, though I can't seem to be able to tell you where, but even if you find it, it won't be of any use unless you also have the book.

...

Ok, so after poking around a little more I found a couple of places. One they are all encrypted and the only way to get the password is to contribute a new database, and the other is http://wwwu.uni-klu.ac.at/gossimit/c/book.htm
