ChessBase Light 2007 (General)
For those who may have been struggling with the very old ChessBase Light, the new version is now out. It is a pretty hefty download, weighing in around 38MB or so, but for those that don't have Fritz or ChessBase9, this download will make the ChessBase format lessons here a lot easier to work with.

Good news, many thanks Don!
ChessBase Light 2007
I've bought the Premium Edition of ChessBase Light recently. (Couldn't quite justify CB9 yet). I've found it very helpful as a means to searching for games and positions. (I uploaded the games that came with Fritz.) I don't know how it differs from CB9 but it does what I need it to do. Maybe an upgrade with MegaDatabase in the future will be all I need?

ChessBase is a such powerful instrument to study chess that will be useful at any time .Probably too much for beginners but otherwise is amazing.
The problem here is not the lack of material to improve your chess knowledge
but the excess of it.The market is pushing us to buy more and more making new material easily available and cheaper than ever but it is a terrible distractor.
This site has actually everything, all the knowledge needed it is here if we take full advantage of it.I would stick with it is more than enough.
Of course playing serious chess with slightly stronger opponents on a regular basis is the other essential thing.
A little story to end this correspondence a good friend of mine used to buy a new book for each half or full point he would get at each congress he played in. Along the years, he was an active player, he had accumulated one of the most impressive chess library you could wish to have but is grading did not improve.

I'd agree. The temptation is to overindulge in amassing the information (whether it is electronic or otherwise) and not spending the time on the hard graft of truly understanding the information contained therein.
Chess is a hobby for most people and, if someone derives huge enjoyment from playing through games from a book in a way that does not improve their playing strength, you could argue that they are spending their time and money wisely.
I reckon most people would like to improve their playing standard but also want to enjoy the time they spend with chess, trying to get a balance between active study and passively reading.
As for myself, I'm sure I spend my time poorly perusing through the books I do have!
