Keres Attack 6...e5 (Openings)

by jfremlap, Thursday, November 01, 2007, 22:50 (6619 days ago)

I'm interested to know the theoretical status of the 6...e5 line against the Keres Attack, 1.e4 c5 2.Nf6 e6 3.d4 cd4 4. Nd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 d6 6.g4 e5. Is it considered sound, unsound, etc. I can find no literature about it specifically (not even a chapter in a book, or an article) and I'd like to know any sources. If anyone has an informed opinion, these would be welcome too. The highest level game I can find is Ljubojevic-Polgar, Buenos Aires 1994, a draw, and if statistics say anything the line scores 48%, according to my database, whose games only go up to 2001. But statistics without words are not so helpful to me, so I am asking. Thanks to all who help me solve a little mystery.

I remember analysing a Nisipeanu game recently for http://www.chesspublishing.com so there have been more recent high level games. However, it is probably better to discuss such opening questions on a specialist openings Forum, like http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl. :-)

I'm afraid I'm no openings expert (or any kind of expert at that).
Kasparov gives 6...e5 as 'deserves careful attention' back in 1983. Steffen Pedersen's Easy Guide to the Sicilian Scheveningen seems to favour white.
There are a few games on the online ChessBase database which you can access, which includes games up to 2005. The Chess Publishing website has an analysis of the game Tony referred to in July 2007.
As an aside, I've at last found how to pronouce 'Scheveningen'! It's in this interview with Kevin Spraggett. The 'lesson' occurs with the position on the board after 5...d6.
