Level of difficulty for Your move! tactics problems. (Problems)
Hi all! I would love to have your opinion on something.
I am trying to resolve the problems for October from the Your move! section, and I am struggling a lot - so far, I only managed to resolve 1 out of 10!
What is your opinion about their complexity? Would you rate them as very easy / easy (so I have to worry about the fact that I cannot solve them), or medium or complex (so I have to be less worried, and keep hoping to get better in the future!)?
Many thanks in advance for any reply!
Andrea

Good question! I'm usually on a mac so I can't open these files but over the week-end I'll stoke up the old wood burning pc and see what I make of them and post my comments here. The mosts amusing level of difficulty I some times come across here is when I can't make sense of the answers...never mind the questions. It took me a while before the "beginer" tactics puzzles became accessible. I always get the impression that this site is good for me if I'm prepared to put some work in...I use that thought for a bit of motivation.

Many thanks for your reply!
It is also refreshing to see other people connecting and sharing - I was starting to be afraid of being the only one on the server!

Not much to report. I got my son's swish laptop on the job. After downloading the "your move" and opening it with chessbase9 all seemed to work. But it displayed the pieces on the board as either captital or lowercase letters. Bit tough for me to decipher this and son got bored so we quit and jumped over to the puzzles where he was more interested in looking for cheats. Anyway I presume this problem is something to do with me and I've got a couple of things to try out - using Fritz rather than cb9 being the first...will post again when I've done this.
Also my son who at 12 is something of a coding whizz...(shame I couldn't keep him much interested in chess
...he noticed that my password is displayed in the browsers address bar when working through the puzzles.

True, I've no idea why as it was a programmer who did all the original coding. We keep all the results in a database so we can see how you are doing!

Well, the short answer is that the forms for the workouts are using HTTP GET instead of HTTP POST. Even if it were using POST, though, your password would still be going across the network in plain text (though it wouldn't be showing up in the address bar anymore), unless the site used SSL.
It's just a characteristic of a fairly simple home-grown web application that doesn't use a more sophisticated authentication / session mechanism. It's good idea to use a different password on this site which you don't use anywhere else, but beyond that, I don't think ImproveYourChess is such a sensitive site that it needs particularly strong security.

I am writing to say that I found the December 2008 Your Move quite a useful exercise and wonder if the tactics puzzles could be produced in a similar way. This time I converted the questions into a pdf file and added them to my Palm to look away from the computer.

How did you convert a ChessBase file into a PDF?

I'm not sure if this is the best way but:
Highlight the games to print.
File->Print->Print Selection
Click Print Button
I then click on the Printer Name Button to change from my usual printer to Adobe Pdf, and this creates a pdf file.
I have Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard installed and I suspect this is why I get an option to 'print' to a pdf file.
It does generate a print error, but that's probably one of my settings and isn't a huge problem.

Presumably you can do the same with any selection of games from the Tactics.pgn file on the Solution Library page? I can put the latest version of this online if necessary?!

Yes you can. I forgot about the Tactics.pgn file.

? What is your opinion about their complexity?
They vary, but they are often quite tough as they are mostly aimed at the stronger subscribers.

Anyway, it is not so important to actually solve all these problems, but it is important to try, and then make an effort to understand the solutions.
To play better chess it is necessary to build up a 'database' of positions and plans in your memory. Next time you get something similar you may know what to do!
