Kramnik - Ivanchuk Dortmund (1) 1995 Position After 40...Nd7
White to Play

I've looked at some of these already and wanted to ask a question about this one. I (somehow) managed to get the right first move and some of the ideas for the next couple of moves. I just wondered how others view the position.

Going through my head was 'Well in a game over the board I would be reluctant to play such a move because it doesn't look clear cut to me'. Does a stronger player calculate specific lines to the end, or do they rely on intuition and previous experience to evaluate the position, thinking for example that the outcome would be 70:30 in their favour but accepting the risk that it may not work out in the end.

(Sorry but deliberately a bit vague so as not to give the solution away.)

A bit of both, but certainly Kramnik would have analyzed the main lines quite far.

Thanks Tony. I think it is one of those positions where I can only sit back and admire the play.:-D
