how to start? (Openings)

Hi

I have just started to play chess and initially bought an insruction book. This seems to want to only go through the "end game" which I am getting the hang of. My main problem is getting started. With a full compliment of pieces on the board I find I loose very quickly not being able to keep track of everything. Can you suggest the best way to get started using this site. In most places I have looked before a "level of ability" is assumed, unfortunately I need a true beginner instruction
